Why Our B Corporation® Status Matters

Snowflake LLC • June 12, 2018

Snowflake is part of a global movement using business as a force for good

Snowflake LLC “helps organizations improve individuals’ and communities’ quality of life.” We take your goals as are own, working as “one team” to make a significant, lasting social impact. We’re not here to profit from you—we exist to help you be at your sustainable best, so you’ll always be there for the people who need you. From our “top-tier consultancy” heritage, we bring unique perspectives, diverse experiences, and a high degree of professionalism uncommon among small businesses. We’ve demonstrated our ability to apply what we know through “community lenses,” leveraging our combined knowledge to make a greater difference in society.

You should take notice. There are few consultants who can say, “we are you,” offer the type and level of expertise we do, and ensure the cost is affordable. With Snowflake, you’ll work with “one of your own,” with a common purpose and a shared commitment to making a difference. Together, we can accomplish greater things, for the greater good.

We’re making a lot of claims here. How do you know we’re legitimate? That’s where our Certified B Corporation® status comes in. The B Corp movement comprises 2,500 companies worldwide, ranging from major corporations like King Arthur Flour, Patagonia, and Cabot Creamery to small firms like Snowflake. B Corps measure “business success” in a different way. While we still need to make a reasonable profit, our social impact is a key part of our bottom lines, and that’s reflected in our missions, goals, operations, people, and relationships with our communities. In other words, we’re using our businesses as a force for social good—to be the change the world needs.

When we decided to become a Certified B Corporation® in 2017, we officially adopted a corporate identity predicated on promoting social welfare. The B Corp certification process is demanding, requiring that companies consistently and transparently demonstrate exactly how they serve their social purpose. For us, pursuit of social objectives is reflected in our focus on serving non-profits and other socially-oriented organizations, while seeking only reasonable profits from our work. It’s represented by the fact that we set aside ten percent of our year for pro bono support, helping local non-profits who need high quality professional advice and support to be greater, but simply can’t afford it. It’s institutionalized in the free training we offer the non-profit community. It’s enshrined in contributing up to 7.5% of our annual income to charitable causes. And, to the extent possible, we source labor from disadvantaged populations, and supplies from local providers. All of our efforts are publicly displayed, so we’re accountable for what we’ve committed to do.

When you see our Certified B Corporation® logo, you can be confident we’ll be a true partner, one that shares your objectives and collaborates with you to achieve them. Since 2014, more than 25 clients have benefited from the combination of our social values and our perspectives, experiences, and professionalism. Let’s see what we can accomplish together, too.

Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is your "microscope" to look in depth at your organization, examine what's beneath the surface, and pinpoint the real reasons your organization can't overcome its challenges. Employing a methodical approach and continuously asking "why" uncovers the often complex layers of the problem and find out where they start. RCA helps you see patterns, connect causes and effects and, ultimately, learn and address what's kicking off the "chain of events" that prevent you from achieving and sustaining desired performance.

We created this short video to show you how you can reach and persuade more of the under-served and in need populations in your area through Relationship Marketing (RM). This powerful approach will help you make a greater impact in your community and in the lives of your neighbors.

Seven steps will ultimately capture the attentions of people in the relevant segments and persuade them to engage. If you’ve been a regular reader of our blog, they’ll sound familiar. They’re essentially the same steps non-profits should be taking in marketing to donors. We’re simply applying them in another context and adapting them to achieve a different set of outcomes. Just as with RM-based donor outreach, marketing should take the lead, and executives need to stay in the loop to increase access, improve programs, etc.

All non-profits exist, of course, to provide some sort of social benefit, often in the form of help to people in need. They strive for impact and, for those in the line of human services, success is defined by the extent to which populations served experience positive outcomes. This requires developing effective programs and making them both accessible to and used by the affected populations. That's where RM comes in.

Do you remember, as a child, how much you longed for a particular gift, waited anxiously for the "big day" and, when you received what you wanted, felt really happy? As an adult, you've probably made New Year's resolutions, waiting (maybe patiently, perhaps not) for January 1st when you'd start anew and do things differently? Even amidst the hustle of the season, many of you also find an inner peace being with your loved ones (although admittedly, there may be limits to how much you can take). This is what the "winter holidays" should be about: hope, anticipation, joy, and peace.

Internal Communications functions typically have the required understanding of their governments, the populations, and the local contexts, and they have the necessary capabilities. This optimally positions them as subject matter experts (SMEs) so they can be internal consultants to government leaders, who become their internal clients. Together, they’re able to get the best information and extract key data points essential for sound strategic decisions, outcome measurement, and course corrections.
