Help for Local Non-profits

Welcome to our Non-profit Consulting Grant (NCG) program information page. Every year, we've provided free or heavily subsidized consulting services to one or more local community service organizations to help them do greater things, for the greater good. We do this to advance our mission of helping transform organizations to transform lives, and as part of our commitment to society enshrined in the Certified B Corporation® status we've proudly held since 2017.

We can provide help in our main capability areas:

  • Strategy for the Future
  • Organization Improvement
  • People Strategies
  • Marketing to Donors and Clients

We are now accepting applications for Fall 2024! Please take a few minutes to read the Eligibility Requirements before applying to make sure your non-profit meets the program criteria. The application process comprises the written form (below) and an interview. It is important, especially (but not only) if you are interested in Strategy, that your Board of Directors is aware of and supports your request. We'll ask you to demonstrate your Board's commitment during the application process.

An information session will be

held July 15, 2024 at 11:00am.

Grant Standards and Criteria

Eligibility Requirements

Non-profit applicants need to meet some basic requirements to be considered for an NCG. They’re listed below, and any organization that can meet them is welcome to apply. We do have to state, however, that even if your non-profit meets all of these requirements, we can’t guarantee acceptance into the program. That depends on who else applies for a grant, what they need, and their financial situations, our capacity to help, our ability to make a difference through the services we provide, and other relevant considerations. We may award one or more grants depending on the circumstances.

Here are the minimum requirements (i.e., If you don’t meet them, please don't apply). To qualify, non-profits must:
  • Be able and willing to contribute up to one quarter of the value of the project, not to exceed $3,000*
  • Provide and deliver services in alignment with the general principles of Catholic Social Teaching (e.g., subsidiarity)**
  • Be willing to sign and respect an agreement outlining the scope, duration, responsibilities, etc. of the engagement
  • Ensure relevant leadership and staff can commit to participating in a collaborative effort with a fixed duration
  • Agree to allow us to publicize their names and the details of the services provided in various ways, as well as the results
  • Be open to virtual (e.g., video-conference) interactions, as services will be provided remotely to the extent practiable
  • Agree to provide solid references to our prospective clients about their experiences with us, our work, and the outcomes
* A few years ago, we added a financial investment requirement to the program to ensure non-profit awardees are committed and remain attentive and participative throughout projects. The contribution helps us keep projects moving, and promotes better outcomes. Our valuation of projects is based on an hourly rate of $135 times the estimated level of effort for the engagement.
** You do not, however, need to be a Catholic organization to receive a grant. In fact, the program is open to both faith-based and non-religious organizations (most past awardees have not been faith-based), and our recipients need to serve everyone who needs the help they provide. We just ask that your non-profit's services are aligned with CST principles.

Applicant Review and Selection

We evaluate applicants based on qualitative and quantitative assessments relative to the others in the pool. We use established criteria and gather information by way of the application and follow-up interview(s). We do not publish the criteria, and may add or delete factors based on the types of organizations that have applied and their specific situations. Our evaluations of requests for NCGs are kept confidential (i.e., not available outside of Snowflake, even to awardees). While we can't give you scoring specifics, past non-profit grantees have  shown, for example, one or more of the following characteristics:
  • Assist under-served groups, create socio-economic opportunity, and/or promote and protect human dignity
  • Provide, or plan to provide, programs and services that address significant social and community needs
  • Are stable and sustainable, or can become so through the NCG program and/or other, related initiatives
  • Deisre to solve socio-economic challenges transformationally, permanently elevating lives and/or communities
  • Have relatively strong Boards that show commitment to taking actions necessary to fulfill their missions
  • Are financially limited, reasonably unable to pay a comparable market price for the relevant consulting services
We reserve the right to decline award of an NCG to all applicants if there are none that we feel are good fits for the program. We may re-open the application period in that event. We may also award grants to more than one non-profit if there are qualified applicants and we have the time and capability to support them. While qualified previous applicants are given preference in the event of a "close race," selection still depends on the needs, characteristics, and conditions, the proposed work, etc. associated with all interested non-profits relative to one another.

For reference, below are some past recipients of NCG grants. Please note they are not necessarily indicative of the types of non-profits we will be awarding grants to in this cycle. That depends entirely on the applicant pool and our capacity.
  • Dulles South Food Pantry
  • Sustainability Matters
  • SPCA of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke
  • Blue Ridge Educational Center
  • Friends of Loudoun Mental Health
  • Non-profit Alliance of the NSV
  • Prodigal Sons and Daughters
  • Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy
  • Project Horse Empowerment Center
  • Response, Inc. of Virginia
